SEO Agency Brisbane: What You're Paying For and What You Should Expect

Published 12 min readBy SNJ Projects
Search rankings and organic traffic reporting for a Brisbane business alongside a content and technical SEO task list

SEO is the easiest marketing service to charge for and not deliver. Paid ads produce an invoice from Google that proves something happened. A website rebuild produces a website. An SEO retainer can produce a PDF full of rising line graphs and nothing else, and it can do that for a year before anyone notices.

This is a guide to knowing which one you're buying. What Brisbane agencies charge, what the money should produce, and how to verify it yourself without becoming an SEO specialist.

What SEO retainers cost in Brisbane

The honest range for a Brisbane business is $1,500 to $5,000 per month.

At $1,500 to $2,500 you should get local SEO for a single location: Google Business Profile management, on-page optimisation across your existing pages, citation and directory consistency, review generation support, and one to two new pages or articles per month.

At $2,500 to $4,000 add genuine content production (three to four substantial pages a month), technical SEO work with development time attached, and active link acquisition rather than directory submissions.

At $4,000 and above you're funding competitive commercial terms, multi-location or multi-service architecture, digital PR for links, and a content velocity that can actually outpace established competitors.

Below roughly $1,000 a month, the arithmetic doesn't work. A competent SEO specialist's time in Australia costs somewhere in the range of $120 to $200 an hour. A $700 retainer buys about four hours. Four hours a month is a report and a phone call.

What should actually happen each month

This is the part to hold an agency to, because every item on this list produces something you can look at.

Content published. Not 'content planned' or 'content in review'. Live URLs you can open. For a $2,500 retainer, two to four substantial pages a month is a reasonable expectation.

Technical fixes deployed. Redirects added, page speed improvements shipped, schema markup implemented, broken links repaired, index bloat cleaned up. Ask for the list with dates.

Google Business Profile work. Posts published, photos uploaded, Q&A entries added, review responses written, services and descriptions updated. All of this is visible on your own profile, so it's the easiest deliverable in the world to verify.

Links earned. Real ones, from sites with genuine traffic, ideally Australian and ideally relevant. A monthly list of acquired links with the URL of the page linking to you. Directory submissions and low-quality guest posts do not count and can actively hurt.

Search Console review. Which queries moved, which pages gained or lost impressions, what that suggests about the next month's work. This is the analysis layer that separates strategy from task execution.

Realistic timelines, stated honestly

For a Brisbane business targeting local intent ('plumber Brisbane', 'physiotherapist New Farm'), expect early movement in the local pack and long-tail queries between months 2 and 4, meaningful lead volume between months 4 and 8.

For competitive commercial head terms, 8 to 14 months is realistic, and the honest advice for many businesses is that paid search should carry lead generation while SEO builds underneath it.

Anyone promising first page in 30 days is either targeting keywords with no volume or is about to do something that risks your domain.

Local SEO and national SEO are different jobs

This distinction matters when comparing proposals, because the deliverables barely overlap.

Local SEO is dominated by Google Business Profile optimisation, proximity, review velocity and quality, NAP consistency across directories, location-specific landing pages, and locally relevant content. Wins show up in the map pack, and the map pack is where most local commercial clicks go.

National or category SEO is dominated by topical depth, site architecture, internal linking, content volume, and earned links. Wins show up in classic organic listings.

A Brisbane clinic needs mostly the first. A national e-commerce brand needs mostly the second. An agency proposing an identical scope for both hasn't looked closely at either.

How to verify the work without being an expert

Five checks, none of which require tools.

  1. Open the pages they say they published. Read one. Is it something a customer would find useful, or is it 500 words of keyword repetition?
  2. Look at your Google Business Profile. Are there posts from the last four weeks? New photos? Answered questions? Responses to reviews?
  3. Ask for the links acquired this quarter, then open three of them. Does the linking page look like a real website with real readers?
  4. Open Google Search Console yourself (you should have access; if you don't, that's the finding). Compare total clicks over the last three months against the same period a year ago.
  5. Ask which pages produced enquiries last month. If the agency can't answer, organic conversions aren't being tracked, and nobody knows whether any of this is working.

Reporting: what to insist on

Rank tracking alone is the classic vanity report. Rankings fluctuate, vary by location and device, and can rise on terms nobody searches.

Ask for four things on page one of every report: organic sessions with a year-on-year comparison, organic enquiries with the landing page that produced them, Google Business Profile actions (calls, direction requests, website clicks), and a short written summary of what was done and what's next. Rankings can live on page three, where they belong.

SEO alongside paid search, not instead of it

The most common structural mistake is treating them as alternatives. For most Brisbane service businesses the sensible sequence is paid search first to generate leads and, importantly, keyword data, then SEO built on top of what paid search proved converts.

Google Ads tells you within six weeks which search terms produce enquiries and which produce time-wasters. That's an expensive dataset that most businesses collect and then ignore. Feeding it into the SEO content plan means you're building pages for terms with proven commercial value rather than terms with attractive volume.

Warning signs specific to SEO

Guaranteed rankings. No access given to your own Search Console or Analytics. Content published on a subdomain or separate 'blog network' rather than your own site. Link building described only as 'high authority backlinks' with no examples. Reports where the only metric is keyword position. Reluctance to explain what was changed on your website, or changes made without telling you.

What good looks like at month 6

You can name the pages that were built and why. Organic enquiries are being tracked separately from paid, and the number has moved. Your Google Business Profile is visibly active. There's a link list you could show someone. And the agency's next-quarter plan is specific enough that you could hold them to it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost in Brisbane?

The normal range is $1,500 to $5,000 per month. At $1,500 to $2,500 expect single-location local SEO with one to two new pages a month. At $2,500 to $4,000 expect real content production, technical work with development time, and active link acquisition. Below about $1,000 a month the arithmetic doesn't work: at Australian specialist rates that buys roughly four hours, which is a report and a phone call.

How long does SEO take to work in Brisbane?

For local intent such as 'plumber Brisbane' or 'physiotherapist New Farm', expect early movement in the map pack and long-tail queries between months 2 and 4, and meaningful lead volume between months 4 and 8. Competitive commercial head terms realistically take 8 to 14 months. Anyone promising first page in 30 days is either targeting keywords nobody searches or taking risks with your domain.

Is local SEO different from regular SEO?

Yes, they're substantially different jobs. Local SEO is driven by Google Business Profile optimisation, proximity, review velocity, directory consistency, and location-specific pages, and wins show up in the map pack. Broader organic SEO is driven by topical depth, site architecture, content volume, and earned links, and wins show up in the classic listings. A proposal offering identical scope for a local clinic and a national retailer hasn't examined either.

Should I do SEO or Google Ads first?

For most Brisbane service businesses, Google Ads first, then SEO built on top of it. Paid search produces leads within weeks rather than months, and it also produces a search terms report showing exactly which queries generate enquiries versus time-wasters. That dataset is the best possible input to an SEO content plan, because it lets you build pages for terms with proven commercial value rather than terms that merely have attractive search volume.
